Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, has dismissed rumours about his well-being and said he is ready to serve.

Tinubu returned to the country on Monday afternoon after spending one month abroad.

The former Lagos governor was welcomed by a crowd of supporters at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the country’s capital.

The president-elect had travelled out of the country after the March 18 governorship election.

On March 22, Tunde Rahman, a media aide to Tinubu, said his principal departed Lagos for Paris to rest and prepare for lesser hajj in Saudi Arabia and Ramadan fasting.

The trip elicited speculation and controversy about the state of health of the president-elect.

Speaking shortly after he returned to the country, Tinubu asked Nigerians to ignore reports from rumour mills, adding that he is “very strong”.

“I’m happy to be back. I have rested, I’m refreshed and I’m ready for the task ahead,” the former Lagos governor was quoted in a statement by Rahman.

“Forget about what the rumour mill may have told you. I’m strong, very strong.”

The president-elect said he has been consulting on setting up a strong team ahead of the May 29 inauguration.

On May 29, Tinubu will be sworn in as Nigeria’s president to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari who would be completing his two-term of eight years.
