THE NATION REPORTERS reports that food is one of the essential basic needs in life. As humans, we derive our energy from foods to maintain life and growth. This is why it is important we are extra careful about the food we eat daily.

In this article, I will be listing and telling you about three harmful foods you eat every day that you have never suspected to be damaging to your body system.

1. White bread

White bread is eaten almost daily in every part of Nigeria as it is our go-to breakfast, already prepared and also affordable. However, just like white rice and pasta, white bread is a refined carbohydrate, and if taken in excess can be damaging to our body. An average Nigerian can eat white bread seven times a week. It is that bad. A slice of bread can contain as much as 140 kcal and depending on your size, you may only need 1400 – 2000 kcal per day to maintain your body weight. Now eating seven slices of bread every day for a week and then imagine the calories such a person will have accumulated. The health risks of eating too much white bread are weight gain and a higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, and other lifestyle-related chronic conditions.
If you must eat it, substitute white bread for brown/ wheat bread. It’s more nutritious and has lesser calories.

2. Red meat

Red meat is a good source of protein in both quantity and quality. Our bodies need some source of protein to get the right energy and nutrients, no doubt about that but not eating red meat in moderation can do more harm than good. The downside to eating red meats in excess is related to the amount of fat, cholesterol, and sodium content. These risk factors bring an increasing rise in heart diseases, such as heart attacks and clogged arteries. The high sodium content in red meat can also leads to high blood pressure, stroke, and lastly heart failure which can lead to death.

3. Potatoes

We eat potatoes frequently in our houses or get them on the roadside, the boiled and fried respectively. Eating lots of Potato will raise the levels of blood sugar and insulin in your body as it has a high glycemic index which shows a negative impact on your blood sugar levels. Although Potato contains a high level of dietary fiber it disturbs your blood sugar levels and makes you feel more hungry than you have to be. In another word, it can increase your body weight. Potatoes may also come with gastrointestinal effects and can also cause bloating.

In conclusion, no food won’t have a negative side to it if taken in excess. So in all whatever we eat and drink, we should make sure moderation is our watchword.
